What an Affiliate Link Actually Is

An affiliate link is an ordinary web link with a tracking identifier attached. When you click it, the destination company records that the visit came from this website, usually by setting a cookie in your browser or adding a parameter to the URL. If you later complete a qualifying action on that company's site, their system credits the referral to us and we are paid a commission.

Nothing about that process changes what you pay, what you are offered, or how the service treats you.

How This Affects What We Write

The honest position is that a commercial relationship creates an incentive, and pretending otherwise would not help anybody. So here is how we handle it.

• We describe limitations. Every service suits some people and not others, and we say which is which.
• We show our reasoning. Where we compare programmes, we set out the numbers and the assumptions behind them so you can disagree with the conclusion.
• We do not sell placement. A company cannot pay to be ranked higher, reviewed more favourably, or have a critical passage removed.
• We label illustrative figures. Worked examples on this site are arithmetic used to explain a concept, not income claims or forecasts.

How to Spot a Paid Link

Affiliate links on this site are marked in the page's HTML with rel="sponsored", which is the attribute search engines use to identify paid or commercial links. Articles that contain one also carry a short disclosure near the top. If a link is not marked, it is an ordinary reference to a source, a research document or one of our own pages.

Verify Terms at the Source

Commission rates, cookie durations, payout thresholds, qualifying conditions and traffic rules are set by the companies running each programme, and they change without notice to us. We update our articles when we learn of a change, but the programme operator's own current documentation is always the authoritative version. Read it before signing up.

Why We Disclose

Partly because it is required. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission expects a clear disclosure whenever there is a material connection between someone recommending a service and the company selling it, and comparable rules apply in many other countries.

Mostly, though, because a recommendation you cannot audit is worth very little. Knowing how a site is funded is part of judging what it tells you.

Advertising and Sponsorship

Besides affiliate commissions, we may at times display advertising or accept sponsored placements. Anything of that kind is labelled as advertising or sponsored content where it appears, and it is kept visually distinct from our editorial articles.
